Michelle Feinberg: A Beacon of Hope for Immigrant Workers in New York

Michelle Feinberg is placing her bets on immigrant workers from Brooklyn’s Chinatown and homeless shelters to propel her newly established personal protective equipment (PPE) factory in New York. Despite the challenges posed by Donald Trump’s tariff war, Feinberg remains optimistic about the future of her venture.

As the founder of New York Embroidery Studio, a renowned fashion contract manufacturer, Feinberg has curated a diverse 300-person workforce. This workforce includes Latino immigrants from shelters and a large number of first-generation Chinese women, producing a wide range of products, from isolation gowns to Navy working uniforms for the federal government.

Feinberg appreciates the benefits of Trump’s tariff hikes, which have generated increased interest from private clients. However, she acknowledges the potential risks associated with the uncertain trade war landscape, especially as NYES aims to transition into the commercial market post-2027.

The story of NYES reflects the broader challenges faced by the US manufacturing sector amidst the ongoing trade war. While tariff hikes are intended to support domestic PPE manufacturers, various uncertainties, including labor shortages and future import duties, may hinder the industry’s growth.

The significance of PPE manufacturing became evident during the Covid outbreak, prompting Feinberg to pivot her business towards producing essential protective gear. This strategic move led to lucrative contracts with government agencies, securing NYES’ position in the market.

Despite labor shortages and intense competition from Chinese manufacturers, Feinberg’s focus on leveraging immigrant workers from Chinatown and shelters has proven successful. This inclusive approach has not only provided employment opportunities but has also contributed to the company’s growth.

While Feinberg acknowledges the complexities of Trump’s trade policies, she remains hopeful about the future of NYES. The company’s success in securing government contracts and engaging with private clients underscores its potential for growth in the competitive PPE market.

As NYES navigates through the challenges of the trade war and evolving market dynamics, Feinberg’s commitment to her workforce and the community remains unwavering. With a resilient spirit and a diverse team, NYES stands as a testament to the power of inclusivity and innovation in the manufacturing industry.
