The US military is preparing to establish temporary bases for deploying missile units on Japan’s southern islands in the event of a Taiwan contingency, according to a report by Japan’s Kyodo News on Sunday.

The report outlines the deployment of a new Marine Corps unit, the Marine Littoral Regiment, equipped with HIMARS rocket systems along the Ryukyu Islands in Japan. These islands, which include Okinawa and stretch south towards Taiwan, will see logistical support from Japan’s military in the form of fuel and ammunition supply.

In addition, the report mentions the deployment of Multi-Domain Task Force’s long-range fire units in the Philippines to further strengthen defense capabilities in the region.

Earlier this year, the US introduced the Typhon missile system in the Philippines, capable of launching nuclear-capable Tomahawk missiles. This move, along with the establishment of four new US bases in the Philippines, aims to enhance preparedness for any potential Chinese aggression towards Taiwan.

The US is strategically aligning itself with key allies like Japan and the Philippines to bolster its readiness for a potential conflict with China over Taiwan, despite the inherent risks of such a confrontation escalating into a nuclear war.
