What I Learned From My First EV Road Trip

My first experience with an electric vehicle was quite adventurous. I decided to take a 500-mile road trip across two states in a Chevy Bolt EV 1LT. It was a journey filled with lessons and surprises that I believe every prospective EV buyer should know about.

The rise of electric vehicles is evident, with sales surpassing 1 million in the U.S. for the first time in 2023. However, there are still challenges to overcome, such as the misconception about an EV’s maximum range. The actual range can vary based on factors like usage of in-car amenities and driving conditions.

Charging an EV can also be a complex process, with different companies offering various charging options. It’s essential to plan your route carefully and be prepared for potential charging delays. Additionally, charging anxiety is a real concern for many EV drivers, highlighting the need for more accessible and reliable charging infrastructure.

Key Lessons Learned:

1. Maximum range isn’t always the actual range due to various factors affecting battery performance.

2. Charging availability and reliability can vary significantly based on location and charging station networks.

3. Charging times can be longer than expected, especially if fast charging options are limited.

4. A smartphone is an essential tool for EV drivers, from locating charging stations to making payments.

Overall, while my EV road trip had its challenges, it opened my eyes to the potential of electric vehicles. Despite the hurdles, I would consider owning an EV in the future, with the necessary infrastructure and mindset adjustments.
