What Is Citizens Bank, and Are Its Credit Cards Right for You?

In June 2025, Citizens Bank underwent a major transformation by revamping its lineup of personal credit cards. They discontinued three existing credit cards and introduced five new ones. While the new cards are solid products, they lack welcome offers that are common on other credit cards and can be quite valuable.

One potential drawback is that Citizens Bank has a limited presence, with branches in only 14 states and the District of Columbia as of 2025. Despite this, you do not need to be a member of Citizens Bank to apply for their credit cards.

Here is an overview of the credit cards offered by Citizens Bank:

Citizens Amp Mastercard

For those looking to build or rebuild their credit, the Citizens Amp credit card is a great option. It does not require a specific credit score for approval and does not have an annual fee or penalty APR for missed payments. Establishing good credit habits can lead to credit limit increases or product upgrades in as little as six months.

Citizens Spring World Mastercard

The Citizens Spring card is Citizens Bank’s only balance transfer option, with a $0 annual fee and a 0% intro APR on balance transfers for the first 18 billing cycles. While the 18-month interest-free period is solid, there are other cards on the market with longer introductory periods, such as the Citi Simplicity Card.

Citizens Summit World Mastercard

The Citizens Summit card is the only no-annual-fee card in Citizens Bank’s lineup that offers cash back rewards. It earns 3% cash back on dining out and groceries, and 1.5% on everything else. It also has a 0% intro APR period on balance transfers for 12 months.

Citizens Summit Reserve World Elite Mastercard

The Summit Reserve card is the most premium offering from Citizens Bank, with a $295 annual fee that can be reduced based on account relationships. It offers various benefits, including unlimited cash back rewards, no foreign transaction fees, Priority Pass Digital Lounge membership, and travel statement credits.

For more rewarding premium travel cards, you may want to consider the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card, which offers a $300 annual travel credit, access to Capital One lounges, cell phone insurance, and a valuable welcome offer for a $395 annual fee.

Nerdy Tip: Citizens Bank also offers the Citizens Summit Reserve card exclusively for Citizens Private Bank clients, who must meet specific net worth requirements to qualify.

Credit cards no longer available to new applicants

As of June 12, 2025, Citizens Bank has closed applications for certain credit cards to new applicants. Existing cardholders can continue to use their cards.
