When Could The Government Shutdown End And What Might Finally Force Breakthrough?

Authored by Tom Ozimek via The Epoch Times,

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in modern U.S. history, has left Congress deadlocked with no negotiations in sight to resolve the impasse.

As critical dates approach, pressure mounts on lawmakers to find a breakthrough and end the stalemate.

Since the shutdown began on Oct. 1, multiple attempts to fund and reopen the government have failed in the Senate. The Senate recently rejected a Republican-backed bill for the tenth time, prolonging the shutdown.

Democrats insist that reopening the government must include extending health care subsidies set to expire soon, while Republicans argue for separate negotiations after the shutdown ends.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) stated that Republicans are open to discussing health care demands with Democrats but only after the government is operational again.

As the shutdown continues, upcoming dates could shift the dynamics:

Key Dates That Could Impact the Stalemate

Oct. 24: Over two million federal workers will miss their first full paycheck, adding financial strain, especially in regions with large federal workforces.

Oct. 31: Active-duty service members face uncertainty over their next paycheck, with concerns about funding options being limited.

Nov. 1: The start of the Affordable Care Act open enrollment poses a politically charged deadline, with Democrats emphasizing the need for clarity on health care coverage.

Looking ahead to Thanksgiving week, the pressure could escalate as unpaid TSA officers and air traffic controllers navigate one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
