Kennedy Advocates for NFIP Reauthorization
Senator Kennedy has been a strong advocate for a longer-term reauthorization of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Last year, he introduced a bill aimed at extending the program until 2025, but it did not receive unanimous consent in December, halting its progress in the Senate. The latest reauthorization bill proposes to extend the program until September 30, 2025.
According to Politico, Senator Kennedy and Senator Bill Cassidy are collaborating on separate NFIP reauthorization bills that are expected to align in the future.
Senator Kennedy mentioned, “[We’ll] probably work together,” indicating a joint effort with Senator Cassidy on the reauthorization.
Senator Cassidy’s bill is yet to be introduced in the Senate, but Senator Kennedy has expressed his desire for not only a longer-term reauthorization but also reforms for the program.
In discussions with Senate Banking Committee Chair Senator Tim Scott, Senator Kennedy emphasized the need for changes in NFIP to encompass various natural disasters beyond floods. This initiative aims to enhance NFIP by expanding coverage without relying on taxpayer subsidies.
Despite challenges in implementing NFIP reforms due to narrow majorities in Congress, Senator Kennedy remains committed to improving the program while addressing concerns related to fire, wind, and hail catastrophes.
The ongoing funding debate is further complicated by the stance of congressional Democrats, who are considering the possibility of a government shutdown to counter Republican policies.
House Speaker Mike Johnson recently unveiled a Republican funding proposal, challenging Democrats to support it and scheduling a vote on the plan for March 11.
