CHICAGO (Reuters) – GE Aerospace is set to lay off nearly half of its workforce at a company site in Schenectady, New York, according to a filing with the state.

A Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification filed on Wednesday revealed that the company plans to let go of 72 out of 152 workers at the Schenectady location, with layoffs scheduled to begin on Dec. 31.

The affected employees are part of a services unit that was previously under the umbrella of the larger GE corporation. Following GE’s spinoff in April, GE Aerospace, specializing in jet engine manufacturing and servicing, absorbed this unit.

An official from the company cited the spinoff as the reason for the layoffs, stating that employees were informed that their positions would be terminated by the end of the current year.

GE Aerospace has extended a “comprehensive” severance package to the impacted workers, offering support for their transition to new employment opportunities.

The notice specified that the plant’s workforce is non-unionized.
