Panama President José Raúl Mulino responded to Donald Trump’s remarks about the Panama Canal, asserting that the waterway belongs to Panama and will remain under its sovereignty.

Trump’s comments about potentially reclaiming the Panama Canal if not satisfied with its operation sparked a diplomatic dispute with Panama. Mulino emphasized Panama’s ownership of the canal area and rejected any negotiations on its sovereignty.

In a recent speech, Trump criticized the fees charged by Panama for the canal’s use, claiming they were unfair to the US. He also questioned the decision to hand over control of the canal to Panama in 1999, calling it a mistake made by previous administrations.

The Panama Canal plays a crucial role in global trade, with a significant portion of its traffic involving the US. Despite challenges like reduced water levels affecting shipping, the canal remains a vital route for international commerce.

Mulino defended Panama’s management of the canal, stating that pricing was determined based on various factors like market conditions and operational costs. He highlighted the economic benefits the canal brings to Panama’s economy.

Relations between Panama and China have evolved in recent years, with China becoming a key economic partner through investments in infrastructure and trade. Talks for a trade agreement between the two nations have been on hold but could resume in the future.

As Trump raised concerns about China’s involvement in the canal, Mulino clarified that Panama maintains control over the waterway without influence from any external powers. On his campaign agenda, Mulino prioritized US relations and proposed collaboration on migration issues, including addressing the challenges posed by the Darién Gap.
