Oh, That Influence Peddling: Times Finds Evidence Suggesting Hunter Acted As Foreign Agent

Authored by Jonathan Turley,

Over the years, there have been discussions about the Biden family’s involvement in a significant influence-peddling operation and the Justice Department’s lack of action against Hunter Biden for allegedly acting as an unregistered foreign agent. Now, the New York Times has unearthed evidence suggesting that Hunter Biden may have been operating as a foreign agent as far back as the Obama Administration, during his father’s tenure as Vice President.

Last August, the New York Times published a story about Hunter seeking government assistance for his client, Burisma. A recent follow-up story by Ken Vogel has shed new light on the matter:

Hunter Biden sought help from the U.S. government for a potentially profitable energy project in Italy while his father was Vice President, according to newly released records and interviews.

The records reveal that Hunter Biden wrote at least one letter to the U.S. ambassador to Italy in 2016 seeking assistance for Burisma, a Ukrainian gas company where he served on the board…

The actual text of the letter was not disclosed by the State Department.

This revelation aligns with the concerns raised by many regarding why Hunter Biden was not charged as an unregistered foreign agent, a charge that has been applied to others such as Paul Manafort and Bob Menendez.

The Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) encompasses individuals acting as representatives of a foreign entity, including activities such as influencing federal officials, handling money or valuables in the U.S., and representing foreign interests to U.S. government bodies.

The Justice Department’s handling of Hunter Biden’s case has raised questions, especially in comparison to its approach towards other similar cases.

The recently released letter from Hunter Biden seeking government assistance for Burisma’s energy projects in Italy provides further insight into the situation. The letter, dated June 2016, requested support in arranging a meeting with an Italian official to address regulatory challenges faced by Burisma in pursuing geothermal energy projects in Tuscany.

The letter sought help in facilitating a meeting between Burisma representatives and Enrico Rossi, the then-president of the Tuscany regional government, to discuss the benefits of the projects for local communities and develop a plan for further development in the region.

The Justice Department’s reluctance to pursue FARA charges in Hunter Biden’s case, despite evidence of potential foreign influence, has raised eyebrows.

While the media has been quick to investigate allegations against figures like Donald Trump, it has been less proactive in scrutinizing the Biden family’s activities. The Justice Department’s inaction in this matter, coupled with Joe Biden’s controversial pardon of his son, reflects a troubling aspect of the system.

This scandal not only highlights the questionable actions of the Bidens but also exposes the shortcomings of the Justice Department in addressing issues of influence-peddling and foreign agent activities.
