Countries worldwide are making significant investments in artificial intelligence to prepare for a future that may look vastly different from today. Increased funding in AI usually leads to stronger innovation ecosystems, attracting top talent and driving groundbreaking research that fuels long-term economic growth.

This data visualization, part of Visual Capitalist’s AI Week sponsored by Terzo, utilizes information from the 2025 AI Index Report to showcase which countries are making the biggest strides in AI investment.

The graphic displays total private AI investment by country from 2013 to 2024 in billions of U.S. dollars. Notably, the United States has raised nearly half a trillion dollars for AI, surpassing the combined total of the rest of the world.

The 2025 AI Index Report also includes data on the number of newly funded AI companies by country, with the U.S. leading in the creation of new AI startups. In 2024 alone, 1,073 AI companies in the U.S. received funding.

Private AI investment is focused on various sectors, with “AI infrastructure, research, and governance” attracting the most capital in 2024. Companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, and xAI are driving large investments in AI applications.
