Texas Prepares For Weekend Protests With National Guard Deployment

Governor Greg Abbott of Texas announced on Thursday that over 5,000 Texas National Guard troops and 2,000 state troopers would be deployed statewide in anticipation of widespread protests against federal immigration raids. This decision comes amidst escalating political tensions surrounding immigration enforcement and civil unrest.

The deployment follows protests that erupted last week in Los Angeles and have since spread across the country. In Texas, demonstrations have already led to clashes with law enforcement. For instance, a march in downtown Austin resulted in the arrest of thirteen individuals after police used tear gas to disperse a portion of the crowd that refused to leave. In contrast, protests in San Antonio, where National Guard troops were already present, concluded peacefully without incident.

Governor Abbott emphasized the state’s zero-tolerance policy towards violence and property destruction, stating that peaceful protests are legal but any harm to individuals or property will result in arrest. While specific cities for troop deployments were not disclosed, Guard members are on standby in areas where mass demonstrations are planned.

Various protests are scheduled across Texas this weekend to challenge what participants perceive as President Trump’s authoritarian approach to immigration enforcement. Progressive coalitions like 50501 and Indivisible are organizing events such as “No Kings” protests in cities including Houston, Austin, Lubbock, and Longview.

Law enforcement agencies are coordinating efforts to ensure public safety during the demonstrations. Austin Mayor Kirk Watson expressed support for peaceful protest but cautioned against destructive behavior, urging the community not to play into politics of fear.

The deployment of state troops in Texas mirrors President Trump’s decision to send National Guard troops to Los Angeles without California Governor Gavin Newsom’s consent, resulting in legal challenges from the state government. As Texas prepares for potential unrest, protest organizers are advocating for calm while remaining steadfast in their opposition to what they perceive as aggressive government tactics.

“There are no kings in a democracy,” emphasized a spokesperson for one of the protest coalitions. “This is about holding power accountable and standing firm against injustice.”
