United’s App Update Might Make Your Next Connection Easier

United Airlines recently introduced new features in its app to assist travelers with making connections at its hub airports.

The airline unveiled a dedicated section within its app on June 25, 2025, providing users with real-time flight updates, gate-to-gate directions, estimated walking times, and a countdown to their next flight. This new feature aims to simplify the connection process for United app users, offering tips for longer layovers and notifications regarding tight connections.

David Kinzelman, United’s Chief Customer Officer, highlighted that these updates are part of the airline’s commitment to transparency and enhancing the customer experience through easily accessible information.

Over 350,000 travelers participated in a beta test of these features during the spring, with over 20 million United passengers expected to benefit from the new app functionality during the busy summer travel season.

Significance of the App Updates

The new app features, available in both English and Spanish, aim to streamline the process of traveling through connecting flights, which are often prone to complications.

The app now categorizes connections into three types – Comfortable, Tight, and Missed connections, providing relevant information for each scenario to assist passengers accordingly.

  • Comfortable connections: Information provided for passengers with ample time to reach their next gate includes airport maps, navigation tips, and United Club locations.

  • Tight connections: For passengers with limited time, essential details such as time until the next flight, distance to the gate, and airport navigation are prioritized. The app also notifies users if their next flight is being held via United’s ConnectionSaver technology.

  • Missed connections: For passengers who miss their flights, rebooking options are provided for securing a seat on another flight or standby for an earlier one.

These updates aim to simplify the airport experience, providing easily accessible information that may alleviate travel stress for passengers.

United plans to introduce location services soon, allowing users to track their location within the airport through the app.

Other airlines, such as American Airlines, are also investing in similar technology enhancements to improve the overall travel experience for passengers.

Personal Perspective as a United Frequent Flyer

As a United Club Cardholder, I look forward to utilizing the app’s feature that provides information about the nearest United Club. This will be particularly helpful when navigating unfamiliar airports and locating the nearest lounge quickly and efficiently.

According to Kinzelman, customers appreciate the simplicity of knowing which direction to head after landing, enhancing their overall travel experience.
