Allegations of Discrimination and Unfair Treatment at Zillow

During his tenure at the company, Herrera rose through the ranks, eventually reaching the position of general manager of rentals, Eastern region in 2022.

Known for his exceptional performance, Herrera claims he consistently exceeded his sales targets in his role as general manager. Despite his accomplishments, he alleges that he was unfairly passed over for promotions and held to different standards compared to his white colleagues.

According to Herrera’s complaint, Zillow allegedly hindered his career progression by favoring less qualified white employees for advancement opportunities. This alleged discriminatory behavior led to Herrera feeling marginalized within the company.

After voicing his concerns about discrimination, Herrera asserts that Zillow retaliated against him by conducting an extensive investigation following accusations of misconduct. Despite being cleared of any wrongdoing, Herrera claims that the feedback he received was tainted with stereotypes about Hispanic men.

Subsequently, Herrera states that he was given the ultimatum of resigning or being placed on a performance improvement plan. Opting for the latter, he noticed a discrepancy in how complaints against white colleagues were handled compared to his own situation.

Herrera’s employment at Zillow came to an end in February 2024 following an incident where he took a veteran employee to a business dinner. Despite receiving approval for the dinner, he was terminated for allegedly violating company policies. Herrera believes that his termination was unjust, especially considering that similar actions by white executives were overlooked in the past.

In his pursuit of justice, Herrera is seeking a jury trial and damages for the alleged discrimination and mistreatment he experienced at Zillow.

Despite these serious allegations, Zillow has not responded to HousingWire‘s request for comment on the matter.
