Senator Lindsey Graham announced on Monday that the Senate is moving forward with legislation to sanction Russia’s trading partners, with the aim of increasing pressure on Moscow to end the conflict in Ukraine. President Donald Trump expressed his support for the proposed bill, indicating his willingness to sign off on it.
Graham, known for his hawkish stance on Russia and other adversaries of the US, revealed that the legislation has the approval of President Trump. The goal of the sanctions is to give the President more leverage in pushing Russian President Putin to the negotiating table, as well as targeting countries like Iran that support Russia.
In addition to targeting Russia, the Senate bill will also impose sanctions on countries like China and India that purchase Russian energy products, which fund Putin’s military activities. The legislation includes a presidential waiver to provide Trump with maximum flexibility in implementing the sanctions.
While the media portrays Trump as growing impatient with Putin over the conflict in Ukraine, the lack of willingness from Kiev and its Western allies to make territorial concessions remains a significant obstacle to resolution. Trump’s recent comments about Putin’s deceptive tactics have been echoed by Graham, who agrees that it is time to change the approach to dealing with Russia.
The latest developments in foreign policy have sparked division among Trump’s supporters, with some expressing concern that he is aligning too closely with neoconservative figures like Lindsey Graham. Despite the initial differences in their approaches, Trump’s administration is now moving towards a more aggressive stance on Russia.
