Putin Doubles Down On Backing Maduro As US Prepares To Seize More Oil Tankers

The Kremlin confirmed that Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke with Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro on Thursday and reassured him of Moscow’s support amidst growing external pressure. Putin expressed solidarity with Maduro’s rule and discussed advancing their strategic partnership, economic projects, and energy cooperation. Moscow has been a longstanding ally of Caracas, standing by their side amid isolation and sanctions.

The recent seizure of a Venezuelan oil tanker by elite American special forces has raised tensions, with Washington preparing to intercept more ships transporting Venezuelan oil. This move is seen as part of the US efforts to pressure Maduro, with potential repercussions for Russian tankers in the region.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov stated that Russia would stand “shoulder to shoulder” with Venezuela during this crisis, citing US dominance in the region as a key factor. Despite Caracas appealing for more support from Moscow, Russia is unlikely to directly intervene due to ongoing efforts to improve relations with Washington.

The seizure of the oil tanker has caused oil prices to rise and strained US-Venezuela relations further. Maduro has accused the US of seeking to overthrow him and control Venezuela’s oil reserves. The situation remains tense, with analysts warning of potential consequences for shippers handling Venezuelan crude.

Overall, the situation in Venezuela highlights the complex geopolitical dynamics at play in the region, with Russia and the US both vying for influence. The delicate balance between supporting Maduro and improving relations with the US presents a challenge for Moscow as they navigate the evolving crisis.
