It’s Very Difficult To Believe China’s Claim Of Mediating Between India & Pakistan

Authored by Andrew Korybko,

China’s involvement in mediating between India and Pakistan is questionable due to its territorial disputes with India and its military support for Pakistan.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi claimed to have mediated between India and Pakistan during last spring’s clashes, but this assertion is met with skepticism.

Despite Trump’s claims and India’s denials, China’s alleged mediation efforts have strained relations between India and Pakistan. India has consistently maintained that its issues with Pakistan are bilateral and has rejected external mediation.

While India cannot prevent other countries from engaging with Pakistan during crises, it views such interactions as bilateral and seizes the opportunity to convey its perspective.

China’s involvement last spring, where Wang spoke with Pakistani and Indian officials, does not qualify as mediation given its own conflicts with India and support for Pakistan.

Wang’s delayed claim of China’s mediation role raises questions about his motives and the impact on Sino-Indian relations.

His remarks at a symposium suggest a push to promote China’s Global Security Initiative, despite potential repercussions on bilateral ties.
