Ethereum Cofounder Vitalik Buterin Aims to Reclaim Computing Self-Sovereignty by 2026

Authored by Christina Comben via CoinTelegraph.com,

Vitalik Buterin, the cofounder of Ethereum, has set his sights on reclaiming lost ground in computing self-sovereignty by the year 2026, starting with his own devices.

In a recent post on X, Buterin outlined the software changes he has implemented to reduce reliance on data-hungry, centralized platforms.

According to Buterin, the two major changes he made in 2025 were transitioning almost entirely to Fileverse, an open-source, decentralized document platform similar to privacy-preserving Google Docs, and decisively switching to Signal as his primary messaging app.

Signal, known for its default end-to-end encryption for all chats and minimal metadata storage, offers a more secure messaging experience compared to platforms like Telegram.

Embracing Local AI and Self-Hosted Tools

In his pursuit of self-sovereignty, Buterin has made the switch from Google Maps to OpenStreetMap via OrganicMaps and transitioned from Gmail to Proton Mail, all while emphasizing the importance of decentralized social media.

Furthermore, Buterin has been experimenting with hosting large language models locally, highlighting the potential for users to run AI tools on their own hardware without relying on third-party services.

Advocating for Privacy Rights

Buterin’s efforts align with privacy advocate Naomi Brockwell’s views on running AI models locally as a way to maintain privacy and autonomy. Brockwell has long championed the use of tools like Bitcoin, encrypted messengers, and self-hosted services to combat government and corporate surveillance.

By gradually replacing mainstream apps with encrypted, open-source, and local alternatives, Buterin and other privacy advocates believe users can begin to regain control over their data and privacy.
