5 Things to Know About the Chevron Credit Card

After a 2001 merger, Chevron and Texaco introduced a co-branded gas credit card, issued by Synchrony Bank, known as the Techron Advantage credit card. This card allows users to earn rewards at both Chevron and Texaco gas stations. However, the baseline rewards offered by the card are minimal, especially considering the current average gas price of nearly $3 per gallon (as of February 2026).

To maximize your per-gallon savings with the card, you would need to increase your spending and commit to filling up mostly at Chevron and Texaco stations.

Here are some key points to know about the Techron Advantage credit cards:

1. There are two Techron credit cards

When applying for the Techron credit card, you will be considered for one of two products:

  • The Techron Advantage credit card: A closed-loop card, usable only at Chevron and Texaco gas stations in the U.S., as well as eligible auto merchants partnered with Synchrony Car Care.

  • The Techron Advantage Visa credit card. An open-loop card, accepted wherever Visa is welcomed.

If you do not qualify for the Techron Advantage Visa, you will be considered for the closed-loop version instead.

Both cards come with no annual fee.

2. Gas discounts are minimal unless you spend enough

Both Techron cards offer a base discount of 3 cents per gallon of gas. With the Techron Advantage Visa, you can earn an additional 10 cents off per gallon by increasing your spending with the card. This additional discount, known as the “Visa Spend Fuel Discount,” is stacked on top of the 3 cents-per-gallon discount:

  • Spending $100-$199.99 per billing period will earn you an additional 2 cents-per-gallon discount.

  • Spending $200-$299.99 per billing period will earn you an additional 4 cents-per-gallon discount.

  • Spending $300-$399.99 per billing period will earn you an additional 6 cents-per-gallon discount.

  • Spending $400-$499.99 per billing period will earn you an additional 8 cents-per-gallon discount.

  • Spending $500 or more per billing period will earn you an additional 10 cents-per-gallon discount.

The initial 3 cents-per-gallon discount may not seem significant; for a 20-gallon fill-up, you would only save 60 cents.

However, by utilizing the Visa version of the card and meeting the spending requirements, you could potentially save up to 13 cents per gallon, resulting in a more substantial $2.60 savings on a 20-gallon purchase. It is important to note that to receive any discount, you must commit to refueling at Chevron or Texaco stations. Additionally, the Visa Spend Fuel Discount is valid only for the month in which the spending threshold is met. To qualify for the discount in subsequent months, you must continue making sufficient purchases on the card.

Keep in mind that the Visa Spend Fuel Discounts are capped at $300 per year.

For a more straightforward alternative with fewer restrictions, you might consider a general-purpose credit card that offers high rewards on all gas purchases, regardless of brand or spending amount. The $0 annual fee Wells Fargo Autograph® Card, for example, provides an unlimited 3x back on various spending categories, including gas stations. It also features a generous welcome bonus: Earn 20,000 bonus points when you spend $1,000 on purchases in the first 3 months – equivalent to a $200 cash redemption value.

3. The welcome offer is attractive but short-lived

All Techron Advantage cardholders are eligible for the same welcome bonus: a 62 cents-per-gallon discount within the first 30 days of opening an account. (This offer is valid for accounts opened between Oct. 1, 2025, and March 31, 2026.)

This temporary bonus is in addition to the standard 3 cents-per-gallon discount.

4. Each credit card offers a distinct perk

The Techron Advantage Visa card includes cell phone insurance coverage up to $300 per claim, with a $50 deductible.

On the other hand, the non-Visa Techron Advantage card provides an “always-on” deferred interest promotion for six months on purchases of $199 or more. However, this promotion differs from a true 0% intro APR offer. If the balance is not paid in full by the end of the six months, interest will be charged retroactively from the purchase date.

A credit card with a genuine 0% intro APR period operates differently. If a balance remains at the end of the promotional period, interest will only be applied to the remaining balance, if any.

🤓Nerdy Tip

The promotional financing offer on the Techron Advantage card is applicable only for purchases made at auto shops that accept Synchrony Car Care credit cards.

5. Join the rewards program and unlock additional fuel discounts

As previously mentioned, the 3-cents-per-gallon discount offered by the Techron cards is modest. To enhance your savings, consider enrolling in the Chevron Texaco Rewards Program through the Chevron or Texaco apps. Points earned in this loyalty program can be combined with the credit cards’ discounts.

Participants in the rewards program receive 5 points for every gallon of gas purchased from Chevron or Texaco stations. These points can be redeemed for a discount ranging from 5 to 50 cents per gallon. Each point is valued at one-tenth of a cent, meaning you would need 500 points to obtain the maximum 50 cents discount.
