Many on the political Right have recently found amusement at the expense of Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D, N.Y.). AOC’s appearance at the Munich Security Conference aimed to provide “balance” to the Trump administration’s presence but ended up highlighting her lack of knowledge and understanding. From stumbling over questions about American interests in Taiwan to displaying a poor grasp of geography and history, AOC’s performance was less than stellar. In an attempt to challenge U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, she only ended up embarrassing herself, showcasing her disregard for historical facts in favor of identity-driven narratives.
While it’s easy to mock AOC’s ignorance, it’s essential to recognize that her lack of historical and political knowledge extends beyond mere entertainment. As a self-proclaimed champion of the working class, AOC fails to grasp the history and collapse of working-class politics, leading to a misguided attempt to revive a failed ideology.
During her Munich trip, AOC emphasized her connection to the working class, advocating for a focus on workers’ rights and worker-centered politics to combat totalitarianism. However, her call for global worker unity overlooks the reality that workers do not inherently share the same interests or political inclinations. This notion of a unified global proletariat has long been abandoned even by Marxist theorists.
The aftermath of World War I forced Marxists to confront the workers’ disinterest in unity and the emergence of nihilism, leading to a shift towards cultural Marxism. The focus moved from economic theory to identity politics, as theorists like Herbert Marcuse acknowledged the futility of relying on workers for revolution.
AOC’s ignorance of these historical shifts highlights the danger of her simplistic views on working-class unity. Her lack of understanding extends to the profound tragedies and revisions in Marxist history, demonstrating the potential dangers of her uninformed perspectives.
