“Risk Of Attack Is Too High”: US Navy Refuses To Provide Escorts To Ships Transiting Hormuz Strait

US Navy Refuses Daily Requests for Escorts Through Strait of Hormuz

Following President Trump’s announcement of providing insurance and navy escorts for ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz, the US Navy has declined near-daily requests from the shipping industry for military escorts since the start of the war on Iran. The Navy cites the high risk of attacks as the reason for not providing escorts at this time.

Despite regular briefings with shipping and oil industry counterparts, the Navy has reiterated its inability to offer escorts. The shipping industry has been making daily requests for naval escorts through the strait, but the Navy maintains that escorts will only be possible once the risk of attacks is reduced.

The situation has led to disruptions in Middle East oil exports and a sharp contrast to President Trump’s statements about providing naval escorts to ensure regular shipments through the key waterway.

While some ships have resumed transits, most shipping traffic remains on hold, impacting global oil prices. General Dan Caine mentioned that the US military is exploring options to potentially escort ships through the strait if necessary.

Despite Trump’s assurance of providing escorts when needed, Iran has declared the strait closed and threatened to fire on any passing ships. Recent incidents, such as the attack on the Thai cargo ship, highlight the escalating tensions in the region.

Amidst the escalating tensions, Trump’s remarks about safety in the Strait of Hormuz and denial of Iranian mines in the region add layers of irony to the situation.
