Deltec Homes, a builder based in Asheville, North Carolina, specializes in constructing prefabricated round houses that are designed to withstand extreme wind loads, even from Category 5 hurricanes.
CEO Meg Gore explained that the circular shape of their homes and unique roof system help to reduce pressure points that can cause structural failure during high-wind events.
Deltec’s approach focuses on reinforcing key connections throughout the building envelope, such as roof-to-wall and wall-to-floor transitions, using continuous strapping and larger truss hangers for added strength.
The company’s standard homes can withstand winds up to 130 mph, with upgraded packages available for up to 190 mph. Deltec boasts a 99.9% survival rate in major hurricanes over the past three decades.
Deltec’s factory, which produces over 100 homes per year, ships to all 50 states and more than 30 countries. The company’s appeal goes beyond storm performance, with a focus on panoramic views and natural light in their designs.
For builders in high-wind markets, Deltec’s emphasis on storm resilience signals a shift towards assessing homes based on post-storm performance. Incorporating high-wind packages may involve tradeoffs in cost, schedule, and design, but can enhance insurability and buyer demand in hurricane-prone areas.
