US, Iran, Mediators In Ceasefire Talks Before Promised Catastrophic Escalation: Axios

Reports from Axios on Sunday evening indicate that Middle East mediators are in talks with Iran and the United States regarding a proposed 45-day ceasefire as a potential globally-catastrophic escalation looms for Tuesday. This ceasefire is part of a two-phased deal, with negotiations ongoing for a permanent end to the conflict initiated by Israel and the United States on Feb. 28.

President Trump’s recent Easter Sunday threat to Iran, where he demanded the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, has escalated tensions further. The deadline for Iran to comply was extended to 8 pm on Tuesday, with Trump scheduling a news conference for Monday at 1 pm, likely focused on recent military operations.

Despite the tense situation, there are reports of “deep negotiations” with a hopeful outlook, although Trump reiterated his willingness to resort to extreme measures if a deal is not reached. Iran has also issued threats of retaliation, including targeting a data center in Dubai.

Mediators from Pakistan, Egypt, and Turkey are facilitating discussions, with a focus on incremental steps towards peace. Iranian officials have emphasized the need for guarantees to prevent a return to conflict once a ceasefire is in place.

However, significant gaps remain between the demands of the US and Iran, with Trump pushing for concessions on missile programs and nuclear enrichment, while Iran seeks reparations, sanctions relief, and assurances against future attacks. The potential for further escalation, including ground operations, remains a concern.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s stance on deescalation is unclear amidst the ongoing tensions in the region.
