Concerns have been raised by Grayscale Research about the potential risks of increased financial surveillance on transparent blockchains due to advancements in artificial intelligence. This could lead to the ability to link transactions with off-chain data and de-anonymize addresses.

This development follows a pattern of past privacy concerns stemming from technological advancements, such as the digitization of financial records in the 1970s and the emergence of the internet in the 1990s.

Grayscale Research has highlighted a new wave of potential privacy threats driven by AI tools that could enhance blockchain address labeling capabilities.

While Bitcoin (BTC) transactions are publicly visible by default, Zcash (ZEC) offers shielded transactions that utilize zero-knowledge cryptography to conceal sender and receiver addresses as well as transfer amounts, akin to physical cash.

Zach Pandl, Grayscale Head of Research, advocates for the adoption of Zcash in light of the evolving AI landscape.

“We anticipate that AI advancements will pose new challenges to financial privacy, prompting the exploration of innovative solutions. Zcash, a digital currency similar to Bitcoin but with enhanced privacy features, could be one such solution… Shielded Zcash transactions leverage zero-knowledge cryptography to obfuscate both transacting addresses and transaction amounts. For individuals valuing privacy, this feature could become essential.”

As of the time of writing, ZEC is priced at $826.25.
