“First Time In History”: Bessent Says Iran Faces Zero Oil Revenue As Tanker Loadings Collapse

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently sat down with Mike Allen for a compelling episode of “The Axios Show,” which aired on Saturday morning. During the interview, Bessent discussed the impact of the Iran war on the cost of living for American consumers. He also addressed his notable “I am the house” remark from earlier in the month, cautioning against betting against the Treasury’s defense of the market.

In addition to shedding light on the global bond rout, Bessent’s insights on the Strait of Hormuz provided insight into President Trump’s economic tactics against Tehran. He emphasized the economic isolation Iran is facing, highlighting the significant decrease in oil exports through the strait. Bessent pointed out that the U.S. has managed to maintain its oil exports while Iran has seen a drastic decline.

Meanwhile, analysts at Goldman Sachs recently observed a divergence in oil exports from the Persian Gulf, with other producers picking up the slack left by Iran. This surge in oil exports has brought levels back to what they were before the conflict.

Recent reports from Bloomberg News confirmed that Iran’s crude loadings plummeted to zero in August, with data providers also noting a complete halt in crude loadings. This decline in Iranian exports is a direct result of the U.S. naval blockade, restricting Tehran’s ability to export oil and putting pressure on the regime to negotiate.

The collapse in Iranian oil exports and the resurgence of other Gulf producers suggest a shift in power dynamics in the region. If this trend continues, Iran’s oil revenues are likely to suffer, potentially forcing the regime to seek a resolution. The situation highlights the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz and its implications for global energy markets.

Overall, Bessent’s interview and the subsequent analysis underscore the complex interplay between geopolitics, economics, and energy markets in the Middle East. The evolving situation in Iran serves as a crucial reminder of the interconnected nature of global affairs and the far-reaching consequences of political decisions.
