Knives For Netflix? The Unusual Proposal By German Police Union Chief To Reduce Crime

Authored by Thomas Brooke via ReMix News,

A proposal by a German police union chief is making waves as he suggests rewarding criminals who turn in knives with incentives like a year’s subscription to Netflix. Jochen Kopelke, chairman of the police union (GdP), is calling for innovative solutions to combat the rising knife crime rates in German cities.

Kopelke emphasized the need for tangible rewards to encourage individuals, especially youths, to relinquish their weapons. He stated,

“For this measure to be effective, the federal government must create serious incentives for those who donate,”

“Specifically, that could mean a year of Netflix for the delivery of a banned butterfly knife,”

Knife possession regulations in Germany prohibit blades longer than 12 cm, yet the prevalence of butterfly knives in crimes has surged in recent years. Surgeons at Berlin’s Charité hospital disclosed treating more knife crime victims in the first half of this year than in all of 2023, with injuries becoming increasingly severe.

Foreign nationals accounted for 41% of all crime suspects in 2023, despite comprising only 15% of the population, according to interior ministry data. Violent crimes, including knife-related attacks, rose by 8.6% last year, with cases of dangerous bodily harm reaching a record high.

The federal government has implemented reforms to streamline the naturalization process for individuals seeking German citizenship, excluding them from foreign crime statistics once naturalized.
