There is a growing concern among many people on the left about the possibility of President Trump declaring martial law in the United States. A conspiracy theory has been circulating on social media, suggesting that a report will be presented to President Trump on April 20th, recommending the invocation of the Insurrection Act to address the border crisis. This theory goes on to claim that U.S. troops will not only be deployed to secure the border but will also be used to round up political activists and send them to prisons in El Salvador. While this may sound far-fetched to some, it is a belief held by many on the left.
An article published by the San Francisco Chronicle brought attention to an executive order tasking the Secretaries of Defense and Homeland Security with submitting a report to President Trump within 90 days, recommending whether to invoke the Insurrection Act. This report has stirred up concerns about unchecked presidential power and authoritarian actions.
However, the reality of the executive order is that it aims to use U.S. troops to secure the border, rather than impose martial law.
Despite this, a leftist author known as “Aletheisthenes” has sparked panic among radical leftists with claims that President Trump will invoke the Insurrection Act as part of a larger plan to establish martial law in eight stages.
This extreme narrative is not reflective of President Trump’s intentions, but it has fueled anti-Trump sentiments and protests.
Leftists are openly discussing civil conflict and the suspension of civil liberties if martial law is declared, further heightening tensions in an already divided society.
While Snopes has addressed this conspiracy theory as more of a prediction than a proven claim, the fervor surrounding it underscores the deep divisions and growing unrest in our society.
The escalating political violence and polarization indicate that civil disorder on an unprecedented scale may be on the horizon.
