Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan members can earn miles and elite-qualifying status based on the Alaska fare class for their flight. Knowing the Alaska fare classes for your flights can help you maximize miles earned and secure upgrades if you have Alaska elite status.

Summary of Alaska Airlines fare classes

Alaska Airlines offers two cabins on its flights: economy class (Main Cabin) and first class. Premium Class, which provides extra legroom and other features, is considered part of the Main Cabin.

When booking a flight with Alaska, your ticket will have a single-letter fare class, which varies based on the cabin, cost, and other factors like the type of ticket purchased.

Alaska offers 17 fare classes, including 13 in economy class (Y, B, H, K, M, L, V, S, N, Q, O, G, and X) and four in first class (J, C, D, and I).

Benefits and features of each Alaska fare class

Your Alaska fare class, combined with the flight distance, determines the total miles and elite-qualifying miles earned on Alaska flights, as shown in the chart below:

Earning on Alaska Airlines flights

Cabin – Purchased fare class

Economy – M, L, V, S, N, Q, O, or G

For example, let’s consider booking a one-way flight from Los Angeles (LAX) to Honolulu (HNL) with a flight distance of 2,551 miles. Here is the total Alaska miles and elite-qualifying miles you would earn for a few sample fare classes:

  • X fare class (Saver fare, economy class). You’ll earn 765 Alaska miles and elite-qualifying miles toward Alaska elite status.

  • V fare class (economy class). You’ll earn 2,551 Alaska miles and elite-qualifying miles toward Alaska elite status.

  • J fare class (first class). You’ll earn 5,102 Alaska miles and elite-qualifying miles toward Alaska elite status.

The fare class you choose can significantly impact the number of Alaska miles and elite-qualifying miles you earn for your flight.
