Base Network Increases Gas Limit to 125 Mgas/s, Targets 150 Mgas/s by Year-End

Key Points

  • The Ethereum Layer-2 solution has increased its capacity by migrating to the op-reth client infrastructure from op-geth.
  • The network’s execution speed remains a key scaling constraint that needs to be addressed to achieve higher throughput goals.
  • Plans are in place to reach 400-500 Mgas/s by early 2026 through the implementation of TrieDB for faster state retrieval.

Founder Jesse Pollak announced on Nov. 6 that the gas limit of the network has been increased from 100 to 125 million gas per second, moving closer to the year-end target of 150 Mgas/s.

Base recently published an engineering blog post outlining its scaling roadmap, committing to doubling the network’s gas limit to 150 Mgas/s by the end of 2025.

Migration to Reth Client Leads to Capacity Increase

The network successfully migrated to the op-reth client software, with sequencer nodes now running on Reth, which has proven to be more performant than the previous client.

Base recommends that external validators use Reth as the default client going forward.

Execution Speed as a Bottleneck

Base has identified client execution speed as the primary bottleneck for scaling. Plans for a native token are in consideration to address infrastructure constraints.

The engineering team developed a benchmarking tool to analyze block building times and performance constraints before further scaling.

Future Scaling Target: 400-500 Mgas/s

Base aims to achieve a capacity of 400-500 Mgas/s by early 2026 through the TrieDB project and new resource metering tools.

TrieDB will enhance state retrieval speed significantly, with storage reads expected to be 8-10x faster.

Efforts are focused on keeping transaction fees below one cent, even during high activity periods. Recent deployments on the network have increased application activity.
