Coinbase’s Ethereum Layer-2 network, Base, faced controversy during its 1 billionth transaction celebration.
The event included the launch of an NFT that unintentionally replicated the work of digital artist Chris Biron.
Base Reaches 1 Billion Transactions
On November 15, Base proudly announced reaching 1 billion transactions since its inception in August 2023. This milestone was achieved in just over a year, a significant accomplishment compared to established networks like Bitcoin.
Base has emerged as the fastest-growing Ethereum layer-2 solution, outpacing competitors like Optimism and Arbitrum. According to a report by CoinGecko, Base ranks as the second most popular blockchain in 2024, garnering nine times more interest than Arbitrum.
“Base ecosystem has seen a 5x increase in investor interest since Q1, ranking second in the layer 2 ecosystem and surpassing Ethereum’s layer 1 ecosystem. Base now captures 9 times more interest than Arbitrum,” Coingecko reported.
Market experts credit Base’s rapid growth to the strong backing and resources provided by Coinbase, the $76 billion cryptocurrency exchange behind Base. Coinbase’s brand influence as the leading US crypto exchange has also played a significant role in Base’s success.
NFT Controversy and Apology
To mark the 1 billion transaction milestone, Base minted an NFT that closely resembled a piece by digital artist Chris Biron. Biron accused Base of copying his work without giving credit, claiming the network had earned over $36,000 from the NFT sales.
“While I appreciate artistic reinterpretations of my work, it’s disappointing when a massive corporation profits off it without acknowledgment,” Biron expressed.
In response to the backlash, Base’s lead developer, Jesse Pollak, issued a public apology, acknowledging the unintentional resemblance and committing to better processes to avoid such issues in the future.
“Our creative process inadvertently mirrored another artist’s work without proper attribution. We apologize and will donate 100% of the proceeds to Biron,” Base stated.
Biron commended Base for their response, describing it as a “class act” and praising the team for their handling of the situation.
