Can Deinfluencing Help You Spend Less?

If you feel like social media is becoming more like online shopping, you’re not alone. According to a report from Sprout Social, over 8 in 10 consumers make purchases based on influencer recommendations at least once a year, with 49% making influenced purchases at least once a month.

Enter deinfluencers, who use social media to counteract the culture of excessive consumption. Through their content, they challenge the idea of needing to constantly buy new things, promoting concepts like #underconsumption, #deinfluencing, and #minimalism.

Behavioral scientist Gleb Tsipursky explains that deinfluencing involves giving people permission to question or delay purchases, which can help combat impulse spending driven by urgency, identity, and FOMO.

Your feed really wants you to buy something

Social media has evolved into a major shopping platform, with a significant increase in marketers partnering with influencers and content creators. This constant pressure to consume has led to the rise of financial deinfluencing as a response to consumer exhaustion.

Deinfluencers challenge the notion that material possessions are necessary for happiness and fulfillment, encouraging people to reassess their spending habits and expectations.

Why deinfluencing could help your finances

By promoting mindful spending and redefining what is truly essential, deinfluencers can help individuals make more intentional purchasing decisions and live a more fulfilling life without excessive materialism.

However, it’s important to be wary of deinfluencers who may still be subtly promoting consumerism by encouraging purchases, even if they are cheaper alternatives.

To combat the influence of excessive consumerism, consider pausing before making purchases, creating wish lists instead of buying impulsively, and avoiding engaging with content that promotes unnecessary spending.

How to deinfluence yourself

To practice deinfluencing in your own life, take steps to interrupt impulsive shopping behaviors, such as deleting shopping apps, avoiding shopping on your phone, and refraining from interacting with content that promotes excessive consumption.
