Can Pretend Shopping Help You Spend Less?

I was browsing on dopamine-shop.com and “bought” a collagen mask, a puffer jacket, and a pair of noise-canceling wireless earbuds for a total of $323.91, but nothing was ever delivered. Turns out, dopamine-shop.com is one of those “dopamine sites” where you can pretend to shop without spending any real money. Similarly, there are sites like foodnevercomes.com where you can order food that never arrives, all for the thrill without the cost.

These pretend shopping sites have become a global trend, originating in South Korea and spreading to countries like Brazil, India, and the U.S. One site, dopamineshopping.com, boasts processing over 32,000 orders worth exactly nothing in 14 different languages since its creation in June 2026.

While these sites are marketed as harmless entertainment that triggers the brain’s reward system without the regret of spending, it’s still unclear if they can actually help curb real online spending habits.

Researchers suggest that the anticipation of making a purchase on these sites triggers the brain’s reward system, particularly the dopamine release, more than the actual act of “buying” something. This experience of searching and finding the perfect item can be more rewarding than actually receiving it.

For some, pretend shopping can act as a temporary pause button on spending, satisfying the urge to shop without actually making a purchase. However, for others, it might just perpetuate the desire to keep shopping.

Ultimately, if pretend shopping doesn’t help you spend less or if it triggers more real shopping, it may be necessary to explore other strategies to manage your spending habits. Building a list of activities that naturally boost your dopamine levels, like dancing, exercising, or trying a new hobby, could be more beneficial in the long run. sentence: “The cat ran quickly across the yard.”

Rewritten sentence: “Quickly, the cat ran across the yard.”
