Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas) emphasized the spillover of the cartel problem from Mexico into the United States, impacting American citizens and necessitating action from Washington. In an interview with Fox News on Feb. 23, Cornyn stated, “[Mexicans are] very particular about their sovereignty. And I get that. But if they’re not able to take care of the problem, and it’s spilling over to the United States and killing American citizens, it’s our problem. And we need to do something about it. And fortunately, President [Donald] Trump is willing to take this fight to those cartels.”

Cornyn also mentioned that efforts have been made under President Trump to provide surveillance ISR to the Mexican elite forces and that the Senate of Mexico has agreed to allow some of our special forces to train theirs.

The lawmaker highlighted the long-standing control of Mexico by cartels and the corruption within its government. Many government officials in Mexico have been compromised, engaging in illicit activities such as drugs, human trafficking, and fuel theft for personal gain.

Senator Cornyn commended President Trump for extraditing cartel members to the United States and for the collaborative efforts to combat cartel activities in Mexico using U.S.-facilitated intelligence. He also mentioned working with the State Department to ensure the safe return of Americans from Mexico amidst escalating violence following the death of a major drug leader.

The recent killing of Nemesio Ruben Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho,” the leader of the Jalisco New Generation cartel (CJNG), has led to increased violence across Mexico. The U.S. Embassy issued a security alert advising Americans in Mexico to stay indoors and follow local authorities’ instructions.

President Trump’s administration provided intelligence to aid Mexico in the operation that resulted in El Mencho’s death. The administration commended the Mexican military for their cooperation in executing the operation.

Cartel Threat

The U.S. Department of State offered a reward for information leading to the arrest or conviction of El Mencho, highlighting CJNG’s significant role in drug trafficking into the United States. CJNG and other Mexican cartels were designated as foreign terrorist organizations by the Trump administration due to their violent activities.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott urged Texans in Mexico to heed warnings from the State Department regarding security operations and criminal activities in the region. He directed the Texas Department of Public Safety to enhance public safety and homeland security operations in response to escalating cartel violence.

“Mexican drug cartels pose a significant threat to public safety and national security,” Abbott stated. “By increasing proactive efforts to defend against cartel violence, Texas will continue to utilize every tool and strategy to protect our state and our nation.”
