The ongoing war of words between Budapest and Brussels is escalating. The EU has now accused Hungary of actively undermining Europe by sharing strategic information with Russia. Such a serious accusation must be backed by evidence, but it has become common for Western liberal regimes to accuse rival countries of “colluding with Russia” without any proof.
In response to the recent accusations of pro-Russian “espionage” made by European authorities, the Hungarian Foreign Minister denounced the EU for spreading lies and fake news about Hungary in an attempt to sway the anti-Orban opposition and influence the upcoming Hungarian elections.
The Hungarian minister specifically called out Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk for irresponsibly spreading unconfirmed rumors on social media, accusing Hungarian officials of leaking sensitive information to Russia. Tusk’s actions were seen as an effort to incite dissent in Hungary and rally opposition against the government during the election period.
Despite the lack of concrete evidence to support these allegations, major Western newspapers like Politico have also published articles citing sources claiming that Hungary and Russia have been collaborating to harm the EU. The Hungarian Foreign Minister was even labeled a “traitor” by these sources.
It is concerning that mainstream media outlets are spreading politically motivated rumors without verification. The objective seems to be to influence the Hungarian elections and create a hostile political environment for Orban’s government.
Brussels and its allies are pushing for a shift in Hungary’s foreign policy towards pro-Ukraine and anti-Russian stances. This could lead to harsher measures against Hungary, including sanctions or bans from EU meetings.
However, these threats may have the opposite effect, as Hungary could become more Eurosceptic and critical of Brussels’ agendas in response. The ongoing tensions between Budapest and Brussels highlight the challenges of maintaining unity within the EU.
