Black Lives Matter Activist Ordered to Repay $224,000 in COVID Relief Funds and Donations

Written by Jill McLaughlin via The Epoch Times

A Boston-based Black Lives Matter activist has been instructed to return over $224,000 in pandemic relief funds and donations to her nonprofit organization. Monica Cannon-Grant, 44, admitted to multiple fraud charges and filing false tax returns last fall. As a result, she was sentenced to six months of home confinement, 100 hours of community service, and four years of probation.

The federal court ruling came after a grand jury indicted Cannon-Grant and her late husband, Clark Grant, on 27 counts of fraud related to their nonprofit, Violence in Boston. Prosecutors revealed that Cannon-Grant had misappropriated funds from the organization for personal use, including diverting donations and pandemic relief assistance.

The judge’s decision to impose the monetary judgment equal to the amount embezzled by Cannon-Grant reflects the severity of the case. Despite appeals for leniency from her attorneys, the court held her accountable for betraying the trust of donors and the public who supported her charity.

While Cannon-Grant’s attorneys emphasized her positive contributions to social justice and community welfare, they acknowledged her errors in judgment and expressed remorse on her behalf. They detailed her challenging upbringing in poverty and an abusive household, highlighting the factors that may have influenced her actions.

As the repercussions of her actions unfold, it serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of transparency and accountability in nonprofit organizations. The case underscores the need for vigilance in overseeing the allocation of funds and donations to ensure they serve their intended purpose.
