The Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Alejandro Mayorkas, provided an update Sunday on a rash of apparent drone sightings in the New Jersey region, stating that while the federal government is taking action to address concerns, officials do not currently have the authority to shoot down drones.

Residents and local officials have reported drones flying over New Jersey in recent weeks, sparking speculation and scrutiny. While some lawmakers have called for the drones to be shot down or captured, federal officials have not disclosed the source of the unmanned aerial vehicles.

Mayorkas assured the public that the federal government has deployed additional resources, personnel, and technology to assist the New Jersey State Police in addressing the drone sightings. He confirmed that the sightings are indeed of drones, though some are mistaken for manned aircraft.

Highlighting the need for expanded authorities, Mayorkas emphasized that there are “thousands” of drones flown daily in the U.S., including commercial and recreational vehicles. He urged Congress to provide state and local officials with broader latitude in dealing with drones under federal supervision.

When asked about shooting down drones, Mayorkas indicated that the U.S. government’s capacity in that regard is limited, with over 8,000 drones being flown daily across the country.

Stressing that there is no evidence of foreign adversary involvement and that the drones have not flown over restricted areas, Mayorkas underscored the swift action taken when drones breach restricted airspace.

Referring to a recent incident involving a Chinese national flying a drone near Vandenburg Air Force Base, Mayorkas highlighted the prompt identification and apprehension of the individual, emphasizing the enforcement of rules regarding restricted airspace.
