American Airlines is set to launch its newest plane starting June 5, 2025, introducing a premium configuration to its fleet. The new Boeing 787-9P planes will offer 51 lie-flat business class seats, 32 premium economy seats, and 161 economy seats, with 18 of the economy seats featuring extra legroom. This configuration is a significant upgrade from American’s existing Boeing 787-9 planes, which have fewer business class and premium economy seats.
One of the notable features of the new planes is the addition of sliding privacy doors to the Flagship business class, now rebranded as Flagship Suite. The business class cabin will be divided into two sections, with front rows in each section designated as Flagship Suite Preferred, offering more spacious seating and upgraded amenities.
I had the opportunity to preview the new plane before its commercial launch and was impressed by the luxurious design and thoughtful touches throughout. The business class cabin features wood and earth tones, while the entire plane incorporates aluminum finishes as a nod to American’s iconic livery.
In addition to the enhanced seating and design, the new planes will also include wireless charging pads, extra personal storage space, and a chaise lounge feature in the business class seats. Amenity kits will include premium products from skincare company Joanna Vargas, along with noise-canceling headphones from Bang & Olufsen.
For passengers seeking even more luxury, American is introducing Flagship Suite Preferred seats, offering a more elevated experience with additional space and amenities. These seats feature a moodier design with dark grays and red accents, along with upgraded amenity kits and more luxurious amenities.
Premium economy passengers will also enjoy enhanced features such as privacy headrest wings, wireless charging pads, and adjustable calf and footrests. The design of the premium economy cabin includes denim blue tones and brown leather accents, creating a comfortable and stylish environment.
While the premium cabins receive upgrades, the economy cabin will see a downsizing in seat capacity. However, all seats on the plane will come equipped with modern amenities like Bluetooth connectivity, seatback entertainment, and power outlets. Starting January 2026, complimentary Wi-Fi will be available for AAdvantage loyalty program members on these new planes.
Overall, the new planes are expected to fly on select routes starting June 5, with plans for further expansion in the future. Passengers can look forward to experiencing these new features and amenities on various routes, including transcontinental and international flights. American Airlines is committed to providing a premium travel experience for all passengers, whether in business class, premium economy, or economy.
