(Reuters) – The second quarter saw a 3% increase in global shipments of personal computers, driven by the demand for AI-capable devices. Apple (NASDAQ:) experienced the largest growth among PC manufacturers, according to preliminary data from research firm IDC released on Tuesday.
PC shipments reached 64.9 million units in the three months ending in June, marking a second consecutive quarter of growth after two years of decline.
Apple’s shipments surged by 20.8% from the second quarter of 2023, the highest increase among global PC makers, followed by a 13.7% gain by Acer Group.
The PC market is expected to bounce back from a slowdown in orders following the pandemic-induced buying spree.
Two quarters of growth, the excitement surrounding AI PCs, and a commercial refresh cycle appear to be revitalizing the PC market, as stated by Ryan Reith, group vice president at IDC’s Worldwide Device Trackers.
“The focus is clearly on AI, but there are also significant developments in non-AI PC purchases that are contributing to positive signs in this mature market.”
However, weak performance in China continued to hinder the market, with IDC reporting that global shipments grew by over 5% in the quarter year-over-year when excluding China.
Lenovo Group (OTC:) from China held the highest market share at 22.7%, followed by HP (NYSE:) with 21.1%.
Dell (NYSE:) technologies claimed a market share of 15.5%, but its shipments declined by 2.4%.
