How Canton Lets Banks Share A Ledger Without Sharing Their Data

Canton Network addresses a long-standing challenge for banks in adopting public blockchains by enabling multiple institutions to record and settle the same transaction on shared infrastructure while maintaining sub-transaction privacy. This innovative approach has attracted major players like JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, and DTCC to leverage Canton for their live workflows instead of traditional private ledgers.

Understanding Sub-Transaction Privacy

Unlike public blockchains such as Ethereum, where all nodes store every transaction, Canton ensures that sensitive information like client positions and payroll remains confidential. By dividing transactions into discrete parts, each party involved only has visibility into their specific role, maintaining privacy and security.

For instance, in a delivery-versus-payment trade, the cash provider sees only the payment leg while the securities provider views the asset leg. This compartmentalized approach ensures that only relevant stakeholders have access to pertinent information, a concept Canton refers to as Proof-of-Stakeholder.

Operational Dynamics of Canton Network

Canton functions as a network of interconnected applications and bank-operated nodes that interface through the Global Synchronizer, a shared coordination layer. This setup enables seamless transaction ordering and settlement while safeguarding confidential contract data.

Role of the Global Synchronizer

The Global Synchronizer plays a pivotal role in orchestrating transactions and facilitating settlement across various applications without accessing sensitive contract details. This allows entities like JPMorgan to maintain data sovereignty while engaging in secure transactions with external parties like the London Stock Exchange Group.

Daml Smart Contracts

Powered by Daml, a smart contract language developed by Digital Asset, Canton’s applications enforce granular access controls within contracts. This intrinsic feature of Daml ensures sub-transaction privacy at the code level, enhancing security and confidentiality.

Adoption by Leading Institutions

Several prominent institutions have transitioned from pilot phases to full-scale implementation on Canton:

  • JPMorgan’s Kinexys unit, incorporating JPM Coin deposit token
  • Goldman Sachs, leveraging the Digital Asset Platform built on Daml
  • DTCC, tokenizing DTC-custodied U.S. Treasuries with further expansion plans
  • Visa, operating as the first payments company Super Validator
  • Franklin Templeton, joining as a Super Validator with the Benji platform
  • HSBC, concluding a successful tokenized deposit pilot

As of early August 2026, Canton Network boasts over 1,200 validator nodes and has processed more than 500 million transactions since its mainnet launch. The ecosystem continues to expand, with varying Super Validator counts reflecting ongoing growth.

Canton Coin (CC) Tokenomics Overview

Introduced in July 2024, Canton Coin serves as the network’s native token and operates on a burn-mint model, ensuring issuance aligns with actual network usage. With a maximum supply of 100 billion CC in the first decade, followed by a fixed annual issuance of 2.5 billion CC, the circulating supply nears 39 billion CC as of early August 2026.

Trading at around $0.09, CC’s value has fluctuated since its peak in February 2026, reflecting market dynamics and adoption trends.

Conclusion

Canton Network pioneers a novel approach to shared settlement on public blockchains by prioritizing data privacy. Through sub-transaction privacy, Proof-of-Stakeholder validation, and the Global Synchronizer, leading institutions can securely settle transactions while safeguarding sensitive information. JPMorgan, DTCC, Visa, and others leverage Canton’s innovative infrastructure to drive seamless and confidential transactions.
