Intel Partners with Japan to Build Semiconductor Research Center

Intel and Japan have announced a collaboration to establish a cutting-edge research and development center in Japan for semiconductor manufacturing technology. According to a report from Nikkei Asia, the Japanese National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) will work with Intel to set up a facility equipped with extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUV) technology within the next three to five years.

Intel will bring its expertise in chip manufacturing using EUV to the center, which will be the first of its kind in Japan. The facility will allow equipment and materials manufacturers to access prototyping and testing services for a fee.

The initiative aims to enhance Japan’s capabilities in the chip manufacturing sector, with investments expected to reach hundreds of millions of dollars. EUV technology is essential for semiconductor manufacturing at scales of 5 nanometers and smaller, enabling higher transistor density and increased computing power.

The U.S. has imposed restrictions on EUV-related exports to China, creating barriers for research collaboration. By having EUV equipment available domestically, Japan aims to overcome these challenges and strengthen its semiconductor industry.

Leading companies like ASML Holding and Japanese firms like Lasertec and JSR play crucial roles in the semiconductor supply chain. Intel’s partnership with Japanese suppliers through the new research center will further solidify these relationships.

Overall, the collaboration between Intel and Japan signifies a significant step towards advancing semiconductor technology and strengthening global partnerships in the industry.
