JPMorgan’s new blockchain chief once warned that tokenization does not equal liquidity

Oliver Harris, a former crypto executive at Goldman Sachs who has now joined JPMorgan as the head of blockchain, has expressed doubts about the effectiveness of tokenization in solving finance’s core challenges. He believes that simply putting assets on blockchain does not automatically make them easier to trade.

During a panel at Consensus Toronto last year, Harris, while leading his startup Arda, emphasized that “Tokenization does not equal liquidity.” Now, as the leader of JPM’s Kinexys division, he continues to hold a cautious view on the industry’s emphasis on tokenization.

In his recent LinkedIn post, Harris outlined his focus on expanding digital settlement infrastructure, enhancing tokenization capabilities, and building partnerships across public and private blockchain networks. He sees this work as crucial for revolutionizing market structure and enabling seamless movement of money, assets, and information on blockchain.

Reflecting on his journey through the industry, Harris acknowledged the challenges of mainstreaming tokenization. He highlighted the importance of reworking the systems that underpin assets rather than just tokenizing individual assets. Harris envisions a global settlement layer that merges money, assets, and data on a unified software platform, potentially transforming how markets function.

Harris, who has previously worked at JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs on tokenization projects, believes that the current technology is mature enough to support such initiatives. He noted that previous attempts were hampered by immature technology and regulatory uncertainties, which are now being addressed.

Prior to rejoining JPMorgan, Harris dedicated time to building Arda, a platform focused on making real estate assets programmable and easier to trade. He sees the industry approaching a critical juncture where real-world assets can be effectively tokenized.

As major banks like JPMorgan invest heavily in blockchain infrastructure, Harris’s appointment signifies a growing recognition of the potential for faster settlement systems and tokenized assets to reshape the global financial landscape.
