Lebanon, Hezbollah Agree To US-Proposed Ceasefire With Israel After Especially Bloody 24 Hours

Reports indicate that Netanyahu’s promised Lebanon ceasefire following Trump’s election win is now in progress. International sources confirm that a US-proposed ceasefire has been agreed upon.

According to a top Lebanese official cited by Reuters, “Lebanon and Hezbollah have accepted a US-backed ceasefire with Israel, marking a significant effort to halt the ongoing conflict.”

An aide to Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, Ali Hassan Khalil, revealed that “Lebanon has submitted its response to the US ambassador on Monday, with White House envoy Amos Hochstein en route to Beirut for further discussions,” as reported by Reuters on Monday.

Israel has not yet released an official statement, raising questions about the ceasefire’s implementation and sustainability:

“Lebanon responded positively to the proposal,” Khalil stated without elaborating. “Our comments emphasize strict adherence to (U.N.) Resolution 1701 and its provisions,” he mentioned.

The ceasefire development is surprising given the recent violence on both sides of the border. In Lebanon, at least five individuals were killed in an Israeli attack in the Zuqaq al-Blat area, with casualties expected to rise. Over 30 people sustained injuries, and some are still missing.

Meanwhile, in northern Israel, Hezbollah launched over 100 rockets, resulting in one casualty and numerous injuries. Among the wounded were a 41-year-old woman and a 4-year-old boy in critical condition.

The agreement includes Hezbollah refraining from armed presence along the Lebanese-Israeli border to the Litani River, a condition Hezbollah violated initially. Lebanese officials stress that Israel’s cooperation is crucial for the ceasefire’s success.

As Israel continues its ground offensive and airstrikes in Beirut and other Lebanese regions, the situation remains tense. Trump’s approach to ending conflicts involving the US is evident, though his support for Netanyahu’s actions against Hezbollah and Hamas complicates matters.

According to sources, Netanyahu’s focus on pleasing Trump rather than Biden could impact the region’s dynamics significantly.
