Lido DAO drops 16% after Ethereum’s new staking proposal – Can LDO recover?

Lido DAO [LDO] experienced a decline of 16.31% in the last 24 hours as Ethereum’s [ETH] proposed EIP-8361 raised concerns about liquid staking’s future. The proposal aimed to reduce staking yields from 2.6% to 1.2% as network staking participation increased.

This potential shift threatened the attractiveness of liquid staking products like stETH, leading investors to reassess Lido’s long-term growth prospects. Trading activity surged by over 230% in response as participants swiftly adjusted their positions.

While the proposal had not been implemented, the market factored in its potential impact on Lido’s total value locked and protocol revenue. Consequently, the token faced significant selling pressure amidst ongoing uncertainty surrounding Ethereum’s staking economics.

Exchange Inflows Persist Despite LDO Selloff

On-chain data showed a positive spot netflow of approximately $214.13K, indicating more LDO moved onto exchanges than left them. This influx often accompanies periods when holders prepare tokens for potential selling, aligning with the broader decline.

Unlike previous sessions with stronger withdrawal activity, the latest shift indicated increasing exchange availability during heightened volatility. Trading volume also saw a sharp increase, suggesting active repositioning among market participants.

Although the inflow was relatively modest compared to the spike in trading activity, it reflected a cautious market reacting to Ethereum’s proposed staking changes.

Leverage Builds as Traders Increase Exposure

Despite LDO’s sharp correction, derivatives activity strengthened with Open Interest (OI) rising by 14.26% to approximately $67.18 million. This increase indicated traders were opening new leveraged positions rather than reducing market exposure post-selloff.

Rising OI in a falling market often signifies growing participation rather than directional conviction, as both bullish and bearish positions can expand concurrently.

In LDO’s case, higher derivatives exposure suggested traders anticipated sustained volatility post-proposal release. The divergence between weakening spot performance and expanding futures participation highlighted increased speculative interest in the token.

If additional leverage enters the market without a spot demand recovery, price swings are likely to remain elevated in upcoming sessions.

Can LDO Bulls Reclaim Control?

LDO saw a rebound after testing the $0.2757 support level, with buyers responding within a fair value gap towards the $0.3000 resistance zone. The recovery interrupted the steep decline, but the price remained below the broken $0.3596 resistance, keeping the broader structure under pressure.

The Relative Strength Index dropped to 36.90, nearing oversold territory after falling well below its moving average around 53.51. This suggested intensified selling pressure before support was found.

While the rebound improved short-term conditions, RSI had yet to confirm a bullish reversal. If buyers reclaim the Fair Value Gap (FVG) and close above $0.3000, a recovery towards $0.3596 could ensue. Failure to defend $0.2757 might expose $0.2385 as the next major support.

Final Summary

  • LDO found support, but exchange inflows and weak RSI kept recovery prospects uncertain.

  • Rising Open Interest showed traders increased exposure even as bearish pressure persisted.
