Metaplex Wants to Bring More Financial Assets to Solana—with Investor Checks Built In

Moving an investment onto a blockchain doesn’t necessarily open it up to everyone. Some assets come with restrictions on who can hold them, where investors can reside, and when they can be sold.

Metaplex aims to embed these rules directly into the token itself.

The Solana tokenization platform unveiled MPL-3643 on September 28, just in time for Korea Blockchain Week. This new standard equips issuers with tools to create permissioned real-world assets and tokenized securities, enforcing investor eligibility and transfer restrictions on-chain.

The alpha version is currently accessible to a limited group. Metaplex has named Orca, Raydium, Solflare, Jupiter, and Phantom as launch integrations, seeking to link these assets with existing trading platforms and wallets on the Solana network.

A Token That Validates Recipients

The concept is simple: before an asset changes hands, the system verifies if the transfer aligns with the issuer’s criteria.

These criteria may encompass investor authentication, geographical limitations, and holding periods. An issuer could confine transfers to validated wallets or block an asset from being transferred before a specific date.

For investors, this means that a familiar wallet could potentially hold assets with unique access requirements compared to a standard crypto token. Possessing a wallet would be just the beginning; eligibility would determine the investments one could receive.

For issuers, MPL-3643 establishes a standardized framework for configuring these controls directly on Solana. The objective is to streamline regulated asset issuance management without mandating each project to develop its own system from scratch.

Streamlining Identity Verification

One notable feature is the ability to reuse verification. Metaplex notes that MPL-3643 interfaces with reputable identity partners and the Solana Attestation Service, enabling investors to reuse verification across various issuers utilizing the standard.

This could alleviate the repetitive process of submitting identical information when accessing a new financial product.

However, reusable verification does not guarantee universal access. Each issuer can set its own eligibility criteria, so being verified for one asset does not automatically qualify an individual for every other offering.
