Polish President Blasts Hate-Speech Law, Bemoans Push For ‘Communist’-Style EU

As the Polish presidential elections approach and the current President Andrzej Duda’s term nears its end, he recently gave an interview discussing various topics, including the Sejm’s new hate speech law, which he stated he would not sign. Duda criticized the left for their hypocrisy, pointing out that those who claim to champion tolerance and diversity are often the ones restricting free speech and enforcing their own definitions of language.

Duda emphasized the importance of upholding democratic values in Poland and warned against the erosion of democratic norms. He cited St. John Paul II’s caution that democracy without values could lead to totalitarianism. The president also highlighted the challenges faced by his party’s proposed judicial reform, attributing its failure to influential individuals with ties to the communist system.

Regarding the European Union, Duda advocated for the preservation of nation states within the EU framework, emphasizing the importance of respecting cultural and identity traditions. He warned against the federalization of the EU, comparing it to communist regimes that suppress diversity.

During a recent visit to Italy, Duda received a copy of the Italian Anthem from Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, symbolizing the strong historical bond between Italy and Poland. Meloni expressed her commitment to strengthening economic and cultural ties between the two nations.

Overall, Duda’s interview touched on various important issues, including free speech, democratic values, and the future of the European Union, highlighting the president’s stance on these critical matters as his term comes to an end.
