Southwest Lounges and a New Card Are Coming 2027

Southwest Airlines has unveiled the initial four locations for its upcoming airport lounge network and announced plans for a premium credit card in partnership with Chase that will grant access to these lounges. This move signifies the airline’s transition from its traditional budget model to offering premium travel options.

The new Southwest lounges, inspired by Chase Sapphire lounges, are currently under construction at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS), Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI), Nashville International Airport (BNA), and Daniel K. Inouye (Honolulu) International Airport (HNL). Southwest aims to open these lounges to guests by late 2027.

Southwest’s decision to establish lounges at these airports was based on factors such as market significance, customer demand, and the potential for premium travel experiences. The airline plans to open at least seven more lounges in the coming years.

Additionally, Southwest intends to introduce a premium Southwest Rapid Rewards® Credit Card issued by Chase in 2027. While details on the card’s benefits and annual fee are still pending, the card will offer access to the new lounge network. This card will complement Southwest’s existing lineup of consumer credit cards.

This strategic shift by Southwest underscores its focus on premium offerings and the associated credit card revenue. Travelers are left to ponder whether these enhancements will bring added value without compromising the airline’s appeal to budget-conscious flyers. The sentence is “I went to the store to buy some groceries.” The cat sat on the mat.
