Southwest Airlines is making significant changes to its Rapid Rewards program, set to take effect on January 1, 2027. The most notable change is the restructuring of the Companion Pass benefit, which will now be part of a new elite status tier and will be harder to earn.

Additionally, the Rapid Rewards program will be introducing new elite status tiers – Silver, Gold, and Platinum – replacing the current A-List and A-List Preferred levels. These changes aim to provide more redemption options and program improvements throughout 2027.

Some upcoming changes may benefit Southwest cardholders who are frequent spenders, as the program evolves to offer more rewards and perks. Cardholders approved for a Southwest card on or before Dec. 2, 2026 will still have the welcome offer count towards their requirements. It is suggested that eligible flyers apply before the end of the year to take advantage of this benefit.

If you currently have a Southwest credit card, consider if your spending could help you earn elite status. While the welcome offer won’t contribute to a Companion Pass after Jan. 1, the increased TQP earnings make elite status more achievable for many cardholders. Additionally, you’ll receive perks like a free checked bag and priority boarding. It may be worth waiting until the new year to make major purchases, as the new TQP earn rates for Southwest cards will take effect then.

For frequent Southwest flyers, a Southwest credit card is worth considering. The recent changes have made these cards even more valuable for earning elite status, making them essential for many travelers. sentence: Please rewrite the following sentence.
