Southwest’s New Fares: Cardholders and Elites Win, Others Pay

Southwest Airlines recently announced changes that will make it more similar to other airlines. The introduction of rebranded fare classes and preferred seating options means that passengers will now have to pay more to choose their seats, moving away from the airline’s traditional open seating policy. However, Southwest also introduced new benefits for cardholders and Rapid Rewards elites to soften the blow of these changes.

The new fare classes and loyalty benefits, announced in April 2025, are part of a larger brand overhaul that includes the elimination of free checked bags and the introduction of dynamic award pricing. While the exact date for the launch of the new fare classes was not provided, Southwest stated that the changes will take effect once assigned seating becomes available for booking in the third quarter of 2025.

The rebranded fare classes come with new seat options, including Standard seats with standard legroom, Preferred seats located between the middle and front of the plane, and Extra legroom seats with five extra inches of seat pitch. These changes replace the airline’s previous all-economy seating chart.

Southwest has also rebranded its fare classes, with Choice fares replacing Wanna Get Away Plus, Choice Preferred fares replacing Anytime, and Choice Extra fares replacing Business Select. Each fare class allows passengers to book different types of seats at the time of booking.

For most passengers, the new seating and fare options may not be ideal. Standard seats on larger aircraft will now have a seat pitch of 31 inches instead of 32 inches. Basic fare passengers without elite status or a Southwest card will not receive a seat selection until check-in, potentially leading to undesirable seating arrangements.

Elite members and cardholders, however, will benefit from the changes. A-List members will receive one free checked bag and access to preferred seats, while A-List Preferred members will get two free checked bags, access to extra legroom seats, and free in-flight internet. Cardholders will also receive perks such as one free checked bag, priority boarding, and preferred seating benefits.

Overall, Southwest’s move away from simplicity may disappoint some passengers, but loyalty can still help mitigate the impact of these changes. Elite status and holding a Southwest credit card are now the easiest ways to access free seat assignments and checked bags. These benefits apply to up to eight passengers on a reservation made by the elite member or primary cardholder.

While Southwest’s changes may make it more similar to other airlines, passengers can still maximize their rewards and benefits by taking advantage of elite status, credit card perks, and the new fare classes.
