Targeting Trump, California Governor Gavin Newsom Signs Bill Banning Public Officials From Issuing Memecoins

California Governor Gavin Newsom has officially signed a bill into law that prohibits state public officials from launching memecoins. This groundbreaking legislation, known as California Assembly Bill 2409, also extends the ban to crypto service providers, preventing them from offering California residents any memecoin associated with federal, state, or local public officials. The restrictions apply to memecoins introduced on or after January 1, 2027.

In a bold move, Newsom took a direct swipe at President Donald Trump while announcing the bill’s approval, emphasizing the need to prevent public officials from profiting from their positions. The governor’s statement highlighted California’s commitment to protecting its economy and its people from potential scams and corruption.

President Trump’s own foray into the world of memecoins was met with controversy when he launched the “Official Trump” memecoin in 2025. Despite initial success, financial reports indicate a significant decline in the coin’s value, resulting in substantial losses for investors. By mid-2026, nearly 1 million investors had collectively lost billions on the Trump memecoin, underscoring the risks associated with such ventures.
