The SBA Loan Limit Is Doubling, But It Won’t Matter for Most Small Businesses

The latest update from Trump’s Small Business Administration offers up to $10 million in SBA financing, combining 7(a) and 504 loans starting July 4, 2026. However, this may not benefit many small businesses as most borrowers operate on a much smaller scale. Businesses with fewer than 10 employees face the biggest financing gaps, with the majority needing smaller loans for working capital and routine costs.

While the new policy may benefit established businesses in growth or expansion mode, especially those in capital-intensive industries like manufacturing, it may not have a significant impact on the majority of SBA-qualified borrowers. The SBA’s previous cumulative cap of $5 million was set in 2010 and adjusting for inflation would be roughly $7.5 million today, making the change more significant.

To qualify for up to $10 million in SBA financing, strict qualification requirements must be met, including proving the ability to repay two loans without default and showing distinct use cases for each loan. While SBA loans remain a top choice for affordable funding, smaller businesses can explore options like SBA microloans for startups and smaller loan amounts. Good credit, at least two years in business, and annual revenue of $100,000 or more are typically required to qualify for any 7(a) or 504 loan. SBA microloans present a valuable option for startups or individuals with lower credit scores. These loans, typically offered by local and community organizations, provide funding of up to $50,000 with flexible eligibility criteria. In addition to financial support, microlenders often offer business assistance and training services at minimal or no cost, which can be especially beneficial for small businesses in their early stages of development.

🤓 Nerdy Tip

If you’re uncertain about the best financing option for your specific needs, consider utilizing an online lending marketplace like Fundera by BW. By submitting a single application, you can collaborate with lending experts to determine the most suitable product for your situation.
