New York City, already facing challenges with crime under years of radical leftist leadership, is now confronted with a proposal that seems to be straight out of a communist playbook: mandatory nightly blackouts.
Assemblywoman Deborah Glick from Manhattan is sponsoring the “Dark Skies Protection Act,” which would mandate businesses and residents to switch off non-essential lighting between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.
Critics argue that this proposal would make it easier for criminals to operate in a city already struggling with nighttime safety.
The bill aims to “preserve and improve the state’s dark sky while ensuring safety for people, birds, and other wildlife, conserving energy, reducing our carbon footprint, and maintaining the aesthetic appeal of the night sky.”
It goes on to highlight the negative impacts of light pollution, such as disrupting wildlife patterns, wasting energy, increasing greenhouse gas emissions, affecting human sleep, and diminishing the beauty of the night sky.
Concerns are raised about the safety of the city amidst a rising crime wave. Should the safety of birds take precedence over the safety of residents?
While lights needed for travel would be exempt, the bill has sparked controversy.
One observer commented, “Criminal groups would approve of this.”
Another sarcastically remarked, “Great, now criminals can roam freely in the dark as they please!”
“What could possibly go wrong?” questioned a third.
A fourth individual added, “While I appreciate stargazing, New York is not exactly the safest place.”
Gerard Kassar, the NYS Conservative Party chairman, summed it up by stating, “I suppose Glick wants to push one more absurd idea before retiring.”
The bizarre twist in this proposal is that Times Square would be exempt from the blackout while the rest of the city is plunged into darkness.
This is not about environmentalism; it is about control disguised as virtue. In a city already plagued by nighttime crime and with leftist policies contributing to decreased street security, enforcing a nightly blackout could lead to chaos.
This situation resembles what one might expect in a communist regime – failing infrastructure, forced darkness, and ordinary citizens bearing the burden while the system claims it is for the greater good.
The same scenario unfolded in Cuba, where communist mismanagement resulted in frequent total power outages, leaving millions without electricity for days and exposing the flaws in that system.
New Yorkers would not be getting safer skies or protected birds; instead, they would experience restricted freedom while the real issues remain unaddressed.
While this bill may not pass, the mentality behind it reveals a lot about the direction of governance in progressive urban centers.
